In today’s video we’re gonna be talking about transaction descriptors and why are they crucial for running a successful business.

So, what do you need to know about transaction descriptors?

First of all, what are they?

Transaction descriptor definition

Transaction descriptors are basically the things that describe the product and/or service on the bank statement. So, think about your customer going to the bank statement and reading through what were they charged on. The transaction descriptor would be describing the product and/or service.

There are three main types of transaction descriptors: Static, Dynamic, and Soft transaction descriptors.

Types of transaction descriptors

1. Static (or Hard) descriptors are basically the general descriptors that describe your product and/or service. They’re short, they’re sweet, and the best practice is to keep them under 22 characters. Here are the examples.

We have “Date Mate” subscription, the number to contact and the country that it was done in.

Here we have the name ‘MuzikS’, we have the website, and the country of the product and their service.

2. Dynamic descriptors describe certain, specific purchases within the product and/or service.

So, here we see the difference that ‘Petheros’ is the name of the company, and the specific thing that was purchased was a coin package in the game. We have ‘GamesLimited’ (the name of the company), and we can see that it’s from Ireland.

WinWin TexasHoldem DealersCorp US

The company again – WinWin, the dynamic descriptor is a TexasHoldem, so they were purchasing a game Texas Holdem for poker, we have the name of the company and we have Uthe S.

3. And Soft (or Pending) is basically either or, but it’s when there’s a capture made on to the account and no authorization yet. So, you can’t file the chargeback or dispute.

So, I want to give you some examples of some bad transaction descriptors and some good ones. You’ll know what you can do to change it.

Good and bad examples of transaction descriptor

You’re going to your bank statement and you see: Debit Card W Incorp. Looks bad, right?

So, the better solution is when you have a debit card and see BusTicket www. bt. com W Incorp. This allows you to remember that you purchased a bus ticket, you also have the website so you can contact them, and then you have W Incorporated.

Another example, Credit Card 4415 SG, what is that even mean?

The better way to solve that: Order 4415 Standard Games (SG) www. sg. com – You have the order number, then Standard Games which represents the SG and then you also have the website, so the customer could contact accordingly. You could also have the telephone number or another way to best contact you.


Now, that you’ve seen some examples, let’s give you some quick three tips in order to keep the transaction descriptors easy and easily understandable.

  1. Keep it simple and short
  2. Think about how the customer is going to react when they see the transaction on their bank account, on their bank statement. Put yourself in their shoes, keep it simple.
  3. And, most of all, keep it easy to find. If you open up the bank statement, you wanna type in ‘coin package’, ‘this game’, and you wanna find it automatically. You don’t search for it.
